Grand Canal Media News (Xu Rong, Li Yanchen) When the classes at the School of Foreign Languages are moved from classrooms to international organizations, what new insights will students have regarding the culture of the Grand Canal? On October 31st, over a hundred teachers and students from the School of Foreign Languages at Hohai University visited the secretariat of the World Historic and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization (WCCO). In this real international organization setting and in the context of canal culture, they sought the “coordinates” through which they can “open their mouths to the world”.

“The vitality of international communication lies in ‘innovative expressions’ that are driven by young people,” said Yang Weimin, Deputy Secretary-General of WCCO. International communication requires the younger generation to tell the stories related to the canal from new perspectives and in new ways. She hopes to collaborate closely with Hohai University in the future, and invites the students present here: WCCO is willing to provide volunteer positions and training opportunities, so that they can apply their professional knowledge to create real international communication works within the context of actual international organizations.

Wang Lu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Foreign Languages at Hohai University, said that Hohai University was founded and developed due to water; it has grown along with the flow of water. The School of Foreign Languages, drawing on the century-old water culture heritage, offers an English (Industry-Education Integration Excellence Class) program and a minor in “Global Competence and Digital Civilization Construction”. In collaboration with WCCO, they aim to tell China’s water stories and canal stories to the world. “We hope that students will be inheritors of Chinese water culture, spend time studying the history of the canals and experiencing the sense of national identity embedded in water culture; become disseminators of Chinese water stories, utilize their language skills to innovate ways of communication from a young perspective; and act as intermediaries between Chinese and foreign water cultures, building bridges for cultural dialogue through an inclusive cross-cultural approach,” she said.
The event began at the Exhibition Hall for the World Heritage Application of the Grand Canal in China. Students from the English (Industry-Education Integration Class) program of the School of Foreign Languages at Hohai University, enrolled in 2026, studied topics such as the process of the Grand Canal’s application for world heritage status, the Grand Canal Cultural Belt and the construction of national cultural parks, and WCCO’s efforts in spreading Chinese canal stories to the world. From Yangzhou leading cities along the canal in promoting the Grand Canal’s application for world heritage status, to the latest achievements in protecting and utilizing canal culture across various regions, and to WCCO’s work in international exchanges related to canal culture, building cultural tourism brands, and facilitating exchanges between canal cities both domestically and internationally – the timeline of how the canal has spread its influence overseas and how culture has reached the world is becoming clearer throughout the exhibition.

During the “Exploring Organizations” segment, teachers and students also watched a promotional video produced by WCCO, and learned about WCCO’s efforts to promote exchanges between world canal cities through the use of canals as a medium.

“Through this visit, I realized that the exchange between world canal cities isn’t just about meeting face to face or taking photos. It involves learning from each other and integrating the unique canal cultures of different countries together.” Student Zhan Xinmiao said to reporters from the Grand Canal Media. As a student at the School of Foreign Languages, he hopes to use the professional knowledge he has acquired to build a bridge for communication between China and other countries, and to “translate” the stories of the Chinese Grand Canal so that more cities around the world can hear them.
