Tall, fair-skinned, soft-spoken and refined in bearing — among the Russian professors in the Department of Biology at Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, 43-year-old Valery Novoseletsky may not be the most well-known, but he is certainly one of the most approachable.

This approachability stems in part from how seamlessly he has integrated into the university and the city. Professionally, he immerses himself in bioinformatics and protein structure modeling, teaching and mentoring students in the classroom. Personally, he and his wife are raising their two children in Longgang, feeling the city’s dynamic pulse amid the vibrant everyday life of Lingnan.

Valery’s bond with Shenzhen dates back to 2017.

At 34, he visited Shenzhen MSU-BIT University as a faculty member from Lomonosov Moscow State University. The brief academic visit left a deep impression on him regarding the young Sino-Russian cooperative university, and quietly sowed the seeds of a vivid imagination about life in Shenzhen.
In 2022, Valery signed a long-term employment contract with the university, joining its roster of more than 300 international faculty members. In the well-staffed Department of Biology, he maintains a dual focus on research and teaching: he delves deeply into protein structure and drug target research, while remaining committed to cross-border academic collaboration and teaching in a multicultural environment.

Valery is fond of saying that the MSU-BIT campus is a natural crossroads of cultures, where Chinese and Russian students study and live side by side, sparking fascinating moments of exchange. Shortly after he arrived, he noticed a heartwarming scene: during breaks, students from both countries would gather, gesturing animatedly and switching between the two languages to discuss their tastes in clothing. Even when they did not fully understand each other, their curiosity kept the conversation lively.
Though Valery did not speak Chinese at the time, watching these young people chat with such ease struck a chord with him. He realized that while science knows no borders, cultural traditions rooted in different nations enrich scientific practice and add diversity to civilizations. Enabling students from diverse cultural backgrounds to grow together and learn from each other is precisely the most precious value of this Sino-Russian university.
Naturally, this cross-cultural dynamic has also given Valery much food for thought. For instance, he was concerned that some young Chinese students tend to rely on AI for coursework and lack the patience to delve into academic papers. Once, while working on a research project with a Chinese graduate student, they hit a dead end. Unexpectedly, the student used AI to analyze a vast body of scientific literature and proposed several novel approaches, one of which ultimately led them to a solution. The experience gave Valery a new perspective on these digital natives raised on AI, and showed him that the interplay of different thinking styles between Chinese and Russian researchers can yield surprisingly fruitful results.

Every morning, Valery walks through the lush, green campus to his teaching building. “Green” is his first impression of both the university and the city. “Shenzhen has a fantastic ecological environment and excellent urban planning, with parks and green spaces everywhere,” he says.

This has become a lens through which Valery observes the city. Once he steps outside the classroom and lab, Shenzhen serves as a true living harbor for his family. Whenever they have free time, they step off campus, just like most expats living here, to explore the city’s cultural charm on foot.
Valery prefers quiet over hustle and bustle. More than the skyscrapers that draw young people, he is fascinated by the ancient cultural traces hidden within the bustling metropolis. Gankeng Ancient Town and Hehu New Residence — a well-preserved Hakka walled village — are his favorite spots. Standing in the grand Hakka enclosure of Hehu New Residence, he is always awestruck by its time-honored courtyards and corridors. Wandering through Gankeng Ancient Town, he is captivated by its winding bluestone paths and upturned eaves, classic features of Chinese architecture, and often loses track of time.
His 5-year-old elder daughter has been a wonderful window for the family to discover Shenzhen and Longgang. The little girl, who attends the kindergarten affiliated with Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, now speaks fluent Chinese and loves making friends. Every weekend, she excitedly begs Valery to take her out — visiting parks, amusement parks, museums, or going on playdates with friends are what she looks forward to most. Under her gentle influence, the family has quietly adopted many Chinese lifestyle habits; for instance, drinking warm water and avoiding icy drinks has become a natural part of their daily routine.

Their most profound cultural immersion, however, came just over a month ago, when the birth of their baby son gave the family a one-of-a-kind taste of Chinese daily life. His wife Katrin gave birth smoothly at Longgang District Maternal and Child Health Hospital, and on the recommendation of friends and relatives, she recovered at the hospital’s Long Fuyou Maternal & Infant Healthcare Center, experiencing firsthand the traditional Chinese practice of zuoyuezi (postpartum confinement). The modern, smart facilities in the ward and the warm, meticulous care from the medical staff left Valery and his wife both surprised and deeply moved.

“Both China and Russia have long histories and brilliant cultures. Over the years, Shenzhen has opened up a vast world of Chinese culture for our family, especially for our daughter,” Valery shares. “In the future, I hope our son will follow in his sister’s footsteps and thrive nurtured by both Chinese and Russian cultures.”
Drawing on Personal Experience: Insights for International Cooperation
Valery sees himself as both a firsthand witness to China-Russia educational cooperation and an everyday beneficiary of Shenzhen’s internationalization. During his years working and living in Longgang, he has formed many insights rooted in real life. As the 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting approaches, Shenzhen’s identity as a city that blends rapid development with profound cultural heritage has inspired his reflections on Asia-Pacific international cooperation.
He has observed that respect for historical traditions and the virtues of rigor and frugality are values deeply cherished in Chinese culture. He has been deeply impressed by how much Chinese people value their historical and cultural heritage. “Rigor, frugality, and respect for others’ creative achievements — these precious qualities matter not only in daily life but are equally crucial in scientific research,” he believes. Good research requires strict adherence to experimental protocols, careful handling of reagents and equipment, and acknowledgement of every colleague’s contributions — only then can success be achieved.
Zooming out from these daily observations to the broader Asia-Pacific region, Valery argues that “putting people first” should be the core of international cooperation: The completion of R&D for a technology or product is no reason for cooperation to end; instead, the practical needs of users in different countries must be fully taken into account. He stresses that the translation of technical literature should never be solely entrusted to AI, as developers know the technical details best. Only with deep human involvement in review and refinement can the needs of all users be properly met — this is the human touch that is often overlooked in cross-border cooperation.
Valery also has suggestions for Longgang’s international talent service system. He notes that the district has built platforms like the Wandong International Talent Home, a one-stop service hub for international talents. In reality, however, many expat families like his own have limited knowledge of the policy resources and life services available to foreigners in Longgang. Drawing from his own experience, he has put forward a straightforward, practical proposal: to develop a mobile app called “Foreigners in Longgang” that integrates government service guides, medical resource lookup, cultural event calendars, and daily life tips on a single platform. This would reduce information barriers for expat families settling into local life, and help more overseas scholars and foreign residents adapt to the city faster.

“Education and cultural exchange are always the most important bonds for building people-to-people connections. People from different countries gather in Shenzhen, and the interplay of languages, aesthetics and customs ultimately fosters mutual understanding and support,” Valery concludes. For his family, Shenzhen is no longer a strange, faraway land — it is a true home. It is where he imparts knowledge from the podium, pursues scientific truth in the lab, and laughs with his children through the city’s streets; a place where they feel fully rooted and at peace.
