When we met Li Xiaomi at a café in Shenzhen’s Longhua District, she quickly struck up a lively conversation, hopping nimbly between topics. One minute she was sharing funny stories from her drop-in cat-sitting gigs, the next she was raving about her latest hidden gem finds — a nonstop flow of warm, everyday anecdotes. This year marks Li’s eighth year in Shenzhen. Over the past eight years, she has transitioned from a corporate office worker to a content creator traveling across cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), seamlessly weaving her life into the rich, down-to-earth vibrancy of the city.

Crossing the Taiwan Strait:
In 2018, after a decade of working in Chinese Taipei, Li made what many would see as a bold, life-changing decision: to move to a new city for work.
Having long been established in her comfort zone, she still chose to pack her bags and head to Shenzhen alone after receiving a job offer from a Taiwan-funded enterprise here. “I didn’t really have a clear concept of Shenzhen at first. I just got the offer and wanted to give it a try.” Like many young people, she landed in Shenzhen with an offer and a suitcase. Her first job was in procurement.
She arrived in the middle of summer. The work was intense, and Shenzhen’s sweltering, humid climate took some getting used to, but she soon settled in thanks to the city’s fast-paced yet inclusive vibe. “Everything is so convenient here. All you need is your phone — to book a ride, grab a meal, go shopping, anything,” she says with a smile. Her mother was initially worried about her settling into a new city alone, but her concerns faded once she saw Li build a steady, comfortable life for herself.
During her time in Shenzhen, she switched jobs several times. Back in Chinese Taipei, her life had followed a steady, predictable routine — work, home, repeat. But in Shenzhen, she says she “started wanting to explore more possibilities and try building side hustles outside of my day job.” She began posting about great local shops and helping friends look after their pets.

Looking back at her early posts, it turns out she started out simply sharing "life hacks for Shenzhen" and "recommendations for authentic Taiwanese food." Over time, her content grew to cover everything from local street food in Shenzhen to broader lifestyle experiences. Her passion for exploring new places and trying good food would later become the foundation of her food and lifestyle review accounts.

From Side Hustles to Full-Time Career:
Forging New Paths in Shenzhen
The turning point came unexpectedly. Her company hit operational difficulties amid market shifts, and she was laid off.
“I did panic a little at first. At my age, finding a new job isn’t easy,” she admits. But she didn’t let self-doubt hold her back for long. “You can’t sit around waiting for opportunities to come to you. You have to go out and make them yourself.”Her two cats paved the way for her new career. A lifelong animal lover who already regularly pet-sat for friends, she decided to turn the hobby into a proper business. She began by posting drop-in cat-sitting service listings on social media, then started sharing short clips of her daily pet care routines. That was how her account Xiaomi’s Pet Companion Diary got its start. The idea behind both the account and the service was simple: earn extra income doing something she genuinely enjoyed.

Her motivation for launching both the service and the account was refreshingly pragmatic: to earn a steady income while doing something she genuinely loved. For every booking, she confirms the cat's personality, dietary habits, and any special needs in advance. Upon arrival, she disinfects, refills water and food, scoops the litter, plays with the cat for ten minutes, cleans up, and sends a short video to the owner. As she took on more bookings, many regular clients trusted her enough to give her their door codes—a trust that gave her peace of mind. She handles the filming, editing, running between bookings, and replying to clients almost entirely on her own. At her busiest, she visited seven or eight households a day, shuttling between residential communities in Longhua from morning till night.
A self-described introvert who once preferred staying home, Li became increasingly familiar with Shenzhen's streets thanks to these jobs. Friends constantly asked her for food recommendations. As more people asked, she opened a second account, "Where is Taiwanese Xiaomi," dedicated to store reviews and check-ins. No fancy filters or exaggerated scripts—just genuine recommendations of places she has tried and believes are worth sharing. The two accounts ran parallel—one for pets, the other for shops—and became her main sources of income. Her life gradually regained its color.

Eight Years On:
Making a Home Away from Home
Over the past eight years, Li's footprint has expanded beyond Shenzhen to many cities across the GBA. When asked about the differences in life across the Strait, she rarely speaks in grand terms. Her feelings about Shenzhen are concrete: convenient, welcoming to outsiders, and the coconut chicken hot pot is delicious. "If I didn't like it here, I wouldn't have stayed so long," she smiles.

When she's not pet-sitting or exploring shops, she still wakes up early to edit videos at home, cook meals for her cats "Zhaocai" and "Jinbao," and occasionally meet friends for dinner in nearby commercial areas. Her review videos are unscripted—she sits down, eats, praises what's good, and bluntly says if a dish falls short. Many peers advised her to make her content highly vertical and niche, but she disagrees. "Life isn't stylistically uniform; it's full of diverse feelings and different experiences." This rare authenticity on the internet has earned her a large following of fans who trust her recommendations for food and fun.
Over the years, people have asked if she wants to return to Taipei. She always answers: "Wherever you live, life goes on. I have my cats, my favorite shops, and a life I'm used to here." Although her content creator income isn't entirely stable month to month, she wants to keep holding on in Shenzhen. If things go well, she hopes to bring her mother over to live with her.
In November 2026, the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting will take place in Shenzhen. The city, home to countless migrants chasing their dreams, is drawing growing attention from across the Asia-Pacific. Like Li Xiaomi, countless ordinary people from across the region and beyond come to Shenzhen to work hard, build their lives, and turn a strange city into a place they call home, immersed in the city’s lively, down-to-earth street life.
These ordinary, hardworking faces are the truest portrait of Shenzhen.
